Can a computer tell you if you are clinically depressed? Apparently yes. New research has proven that a web based test can make a reliable diagnosis of depression. Maybe the next step is to install Prozac dispensers in place of hard drives? No wonder depression is on the rise: if we are planning to replace GPs with PCs, things can only get worse.
If you ever feel very low, talk about it with someone: he should be patient enough to listen, and wise enough not to make things worse. A friend might fit the bill, a PC will never do.

Sometimes PC is safer. For long I have been blamed for being "too intense".. I feel things stringly whether it is happinness or sadnees and sometimes or rather often I wish I could just be less of an emotional being. If I could only reason through my emotions.. But I have learned that saddness is a feeling that one needs to hide...that friends have problems of their own, sometimes bigger then mine, don't want people to be tired of my lows. So at least a PC is reassuring in letting me know that I am not clinicaly depressed. Just learning how to deal with these immense ocean of my everpresent emotions. And thank you for keeping this blog.

Thanks for your comment Magda. I guess sometimes negative emotions are just too strong, and our friends might react badly to our need of expressing them. A PC might feel safer: a PC is never going to complain that I have ruined his Saturday nights with stories of my failed marriage! On the other hand, it is very important to have someone with whom you can express your sadness: that's the best way to leave it behind and to move on to bigger and better things. Magda, remember to ditch the happy mask every once in a while, just choose carefully where and when.

I sometimes find it difficult to "reach out" to others in times of strong emotions. I find that writing my emotions down really helps, and I've also read somewhere that emotions change, albeit sometimes subtley, after 20 mins - knowing this when I feel low helps me to remember the feelings will pass, and allows me to sense the light will be at the end of the tunnel.

I do feel that a PC is sometimes helpful, but like someone said it is important to have someone by our side when we are feeling very low. If a friend never wants to hear about your problems, and is only around for good times, that is NOT a friend in my book. At the moment I am feeling a bit depress because my financial sitaution is not improving. My method right now is looking for a better job and doing loads of writing in my journal, this helps me get through tough times like now. I know things will get better somehow, someway, they will!!

Janice, you have identified a practical problem and you are doing something to address it: that's great! You say: "I am a bit depresses because my financial situation is not improving". Well, being a bit depressed is natural. There's nothing wrong with it. On the other hand, do rember that lack of money can't MAKE you sad, it is our internal reaction to outside events which shape our moods. Go along with your feeling "a bit depressed": when the time is right, you'll be happier no matter what. :)
