Happiness in Afghanistan Khan family, Kabul, Afghanistan. The Talibans have left, but the culture hasn’t changed much: reading 'The Bookseller of Kabul', we discover how giving birth to a baby girl is still considered a tragedy, but Tajmir Khan is not going to let a happy event turn soar...

‘My wife is terrified of having a daughter’, says Tajmir. ‘She is always frightened of something, and this time it was about having a daughter. So I told her and everybody else that I wanted a daughter. That above all I wanted a daughter. So that if we did have a daughter no one would say, how sad, and if we got a boy no one would say anything, because then everyone would be pleased no matter what’

Wherever we are, when family and friends become enemies of our personal quest for happiness, we can found ways to do our thing and stay popular. And by looking for happiness, we realize that our well being depends on others: can Tajmir be happy if his wife feels very sad? Can they both prosper in a society that despise them? Possible, but unlikely. Let’s not make our life a struggle unless it is absolutely necessary too!
